Sussex Community Foundation launched the Endowment Challenge at Chichester’s South Downs Planetarium and Science Centre on 23rd of October 2008.
The Endowment Challenge gives an opportunity for Sussex donors to double the value of their giving to local good causes. This fund will be used as a long term resource to provide grants for community groups across Sussex.
Already the fund has started to build, thanks to a donation from the Field family of West Hoathly – former West Sussex High Sheriff Colin Field and former Mid Sussex Council Leader and Chairman Christine Field, have set up a family fund as part of the challenge and will be working with the Foundation and their three children to decide how best their grants can be distributed to good causes in Sussex.
Colin Field Commented, “We were keen to set up a permanent fund that would provide support for the local community for many generations to come. That’s why we felt the option of establishing an endowment fund was so attractive”.
The South Downs Planetarium project hosted the launch event. Guests learned about the development of the project and enjoyed a show given by Dr John Mason, one of the Founders. The project was born out of an awareness of the need to promote a greater understanding of science in general and astronomy in particular. The Planetarium is run entirely by volunteers and over 80,000 people have visited since it opened to the public in 2001.
