Celebrating Lester's Wonderful World

The unique work of a talented local young artist Lester Magoogan was featured at a special event on Thursday October 15th in the beautiful setting of Stanmer house.

The event was organised by Sussex Community Foundation as part of their Celebrating Sussex series, showcasing inspirational Sussex people and organisations as well as raising awareness and support for the Foundation.

Lester Magoogan has an amazing ability to simplify the world around him into minimalist drawings of loveable monsters and entertaining cartoon characters. He is gaining national recognition with recent exhibitions at Tate Modern, The Lowry and Oxo Gallery.
So popular is his work that Art Republic in Brighton and London are now stocking limited editions of his prints. Recently he has branched into animation, taking fourth place in the BBC Animator of the Year Competition and winning recognition at an art & moving picture festival in Prague.

Lester also has Down’s Syndrome and his achievements demonstrate how artistic expression and human fulfilment can be achieved regardless of disadvantage or disability.
Guests had the opportunity to meet Lester, view an exhibition of his artwork and animations and find out more about his work.
There was also be an update on developments at Sussex Community Foundation. Since it was set up in 2006 the Foundation has provided grants for over 750 organisations across Sussex worth £1.7 million.
This funding includes over £240,000 for a wide range of local arts projects, ranging from theatre groups to community festivals, music and the visual arts.

Mike Holland, the owner of Stanmer House hosted the evening on behalf of the Foundation. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to exhibit Lester’s wonderful work and help to grow the work of Sussex Community Foundation, a very important resource for our local community.”

The event was also supported by the Brighton office of Coutts & Co who sponsored the refreshments.
